Ercole and Caco

Ercole and Caco

The history

Michelangelo had been commissioned for its execution, but due to his commitments in Rome at the court of the popes, the work was entrusted to Baccio Bandinelli in 1530, who finished it in 1534. The allegorical theme is that of the strength and ingenuity of Hercules defeating the evil of Cacus, an episode narrated by Virgil and other poets in the saga of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. For this reason, the theme perfectly matches the meaning of the statues of David and Judith and Holofernes, and enhances the freedom of Man from oppressors.
