Sculpted by Donatello between 1453 and 1457 at the end of his career, Judith and Holofernes depicts the biblical episode of the young woman who beheads the enemy leader to save her city. Like David, she is also a symbol of virtue that overcomes brute force. The original was moved to Palazzo Vecchio after the 1988 restoration, and replaced with a bronze copy on the Arengario.
The restoration will start in 2022.
