Equestrian statue of Cosimo I

The history

The equestrian statue of Cosimo I de ‘Medici is an artwork by Giambologna located in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. It was commissioned in 1587 by Ferdinando I de’ Medici to celebrate his father, who was the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. The most important sculptor active in Florence at the time, Giambologna, was contracted. The project included a bronze statue and it was the first large equestrian sculpture made in Florence.

The restoration

The restoration will start in 2022.
